i was digging through some underwear in a charity shop
when i came across a curious little package of sorts
there was no image, no design
just a message that was handwritten in homemade rhyme
it said
reader these seeds are for you
take them home and plant them in the earth
and see what they can do
i thought

gave my pennies to the pensioner, ran all the way home
and when i got to ma house
i was out of breath
hands on ma knees
i need to stop smoking these cigarettes
unlocked the door and ran straight to the back garden
found a plot of earth
took the seeds out and started planting
i watched them grow until they snapped into two pieces
on the gr-ss, i witnessed the birth of a new species
one of them
had ten feet and no head
the other one was purple with five arms and legs
the way they moved
was quite comical
it made me laugh
when they tried to get over each blade of gr-ss
see, none of them were no bigger than a ping pong ball
but compared to the ladybug they seemed quite tall
they followed the ladybug as it crawled away
enthralled by it’s red and black spotted malaise
the one with the arms jumped on his back as he opened his wings
in the air, i swear i heard him sing
hey baby, watch me fly!

grow until the fence can’t stand it

the ladybug
couldn’t hold his weight
so they plummeted to earth by the golden gate
i picked his wee friend up and ran to see if he was ok
hoping that he didn’t go and die on his first day
imagine my relief when i found he was still breathing
only one broken leg and minor bleeding
i fixed him up, right, while feet was picking daisies
to form into an amazing arrangement for ladybug
who died from his injuries
sh-ll crushed into a million little pieces
don’t think he went peacefully but anyway
we gave him a send off worthy of the king of spain
here lies ladybug
rest in pieces
he died for a good cause just like jesus
(mikey you really cannot say that)
i woke up the next morning, tired and yawning
a n-ggle in my head like a shepherd’s red warning
and then i remembered the day before
couldn’t quite make out if it was true or false
i couldn’t quite make sense of the day’s events
so i jumped out of bed to see if i could find my new friends
as i recall i made them beds out of matchboxes and placed them on the heater in the hallway
but when i got there the creatures had gone
just a couple of seeds lay on the sheets alone
right then i knew the answer
i got a pen and envelope
put the seeds inside and wrote
dear reader these seeds are for you
take them home plant them in the earth and see what they can do!
