lirik lagu jmd – because the internet: theory

Loading...

notes from because the internet:

the action description in this screenplay often speaks directly to the reader, probably to communicate bino’s vision to the director, but i believe that he also left clues in the action description to hint at the secrets of this movie’s plot
the full line is “nothing real is ever ‘fine’. remember this.” what is donald trying to tell us here? is he being playful; making fun of the vast subtext that usually accompanies the word “fine”? perhaps. or perhaps there’s more to it. perhaps this line is important. perhaps the most important of the entire script. but why? i did not realize the true significance of this phrase until one page later when i read this line: people he didn’t know or like casually walking through his home and him having to pretend everything is “fine”… notice that the word “fine” is in parentheses in the script. why? because it is so important. it was this idea that sparked my theory about because the internet

the world isn’t real

throughout the entire script there is something slightly wrong with the world. the boy senses this imbalance but is unable to locate the source of this feeling. i believe that the secret behind the script is this: the world of the story is actually a computer-generated virtual reality, but physical existence has not completely crossed over into cybersp-ce yet. it is on the brink of becoming digital and the boy (who spends most of his time online) is beginning to notice it. he feels out-of-place and paranoid because his universe is slowly becoming cybernated and he (unlike the rest of the world) is still self-aware. he is a computer error. a glitch. and although he does not fully grasp what it is he knows, he is haunted by the notion that something is wrong with this world. there is a consistent use of texting-abbreviations and emojis in the action description of the story. these things exist only in a digital realm, yet they are constantly used to describe the world in which the boy lives, indicating that his world is digital itself. things that are done online keep appearing in the real world. “roscoe’s wetsuit” starts out as a tweet and then it starts appearing in real life. in clapping for the wrong reasons the boy pulls a gold tooth out of his nose and the name of his twitter account is @thegoldmolar. abella anderson’s character first appears in the lyric video for 3005 where the boy is video chatting her. then in cftwr she becomes manifested in the real world

now if this theory really is correct, or at least partly correct, then it must be done for a reason. donald glover wrote this script with a message in mind and so this theory must supply a moral to the story to support it’s credibility. i believe the message is this: our generation (which was born into wealth ”life ain’t fair”) is spending more and more time inside the world of the internet (just like the boy). however as this technological advancement occurs, the lines between the real world and the digital world begin to blur!

concerning the word fine:
there are only a few other instances of the word “fine” in the script. however, the first two times we see the word “fine” in the script, it is followed very closely by “roscoe’s wetsuit”. i will explain this later on

1. the word “fine” first appears on page 13

it’s possible that “it” means the car, which would indicate that the porsche isn’t real, which might be why the boy wanted to choose another car instead

(one page later, the boy sees “roscoe’s wetsuit” spraypainted on the sidewalk)

2. the second time it appears is on page 27

ok. yeah it’s getting a little confusing, but if you read this the right way it looks like he’s saying that the cows are not real. an odd thing to say? yes. but the conspiracy goes just a little bit further right here:
https://twitter.com/thegoldmolar/status/406535978636308480
this is a tweet from @thegoldmolar; the boy’s twitter account! the gif in the tweet shows a very similar scene to the one in the script (with a violent and s-xual twist indicative of the character’s disturbed personality). it is unlikely this is a coincidence and although i’m not sure what it means yet, it’s still worth mentioning

(immediately after this happens, the boy sees the “roscoe’s wetsuit” billboard)

3. the third is on page 66

here, the word “fine” is finally explained in the context of the script and we also learn something else important which is that naomi is not real. it is worth noting that the boy never sees “roscoe’s wetsuit” again after this point in the script, which brings us to the greatest mystery of this whole story; wtf is roscoe’s wetsuit?!?

roscoe’s wetsuit:
if you put “roscoe’s wetsuit” into the wu-tang name generator, you get “sixty second the baptist”. if you put “donald bennett”, (childish gambino’s first name and chance the rapper’s last name) you also get sixty second the baptist
what are the odds?
a brilliant discovery. it seems very likely that this is where the phrase “roscoe’s wetsuit” comes from and it also alludes to the possibility of a chance/childish collab in the future

there is also something relating to roscoe’s wetsuit on the childish gambino tumblr irl page
it is a photograph of the boy’s bedroom and look at what’s hanging from the coatrack on the left of the bed. a wetsuit. maybe the boy’s name is actually “roscoe”. however the significance of “roscoe’s wetsuit” in the context of the story remains unsolved, but we now know where the term came from

so here is what i think “roscoe’s wetsuit” really is: a computer error message. or something very similar to it. it’s a warning screen that pops up whenever the boy starts to become aware of what’s really going on. (for example: whenever he gets dejá vu). whenever he becomes too curious the message pops up and blocks him from progressing any further in his thought process. then on page 66 when he figures out the word “fine”, this marks the turning point in the story where the boy starts to realize what is happening to the world. the digital dreamscape is blending with reality and he is in the center of it. he never sees “roscoe’s wetsuit” again

the creatures:
these creatures represent the way the boy is starting to see internet users; as mindless, blank cyber-drones. the genitals are the source of human life and these creatures have none. they have lost their humanity. this is not to say that s-x is what makes us human; rather that the genitals simply symbolize all that makes us who we are. these creatures are the zombie slaves of the internet

sidenote: the creatures also have difficulty breathing. air is another source of human life

notice the line it’s cute for a very short moment. then it feels wrong.” he is alluding to the message of this whole album/movie: the internet started out helpful and positive, but almost instantaneously it became an overwhelming, consuming universe full of lifeless disciples who are plugged into it 24/7

also note the way he describes their physical appearance: “…two legs, two arms, like humans. but they are definitely not humans.” they are still technically human beings on the surface but the internet has changed who they really are. this further supports the theory that the real world is merging with the online world. these creatures are still partly human, but they are in the middle of a horrible transformation/transition in which their life force is being removed

the guards:
a couple of times during the script the boy’s life is interrupted by a car full of men with guns

• when he is waiting in line and he sees “roscoe’s wetsuit” on the sidewalk, a car shows up and shoots the guy in front of him in line
•when he and the guys are eating burgers on top of their car at in-n-out burger, a car shows up full of gangsters who start to rob the restaurant
•at the end of the script he is in the mansion, a car pulls up and a bunch of cops with guns get out and confront him in his house

i call these men “the guards” because in my mind they represent the patrolling guardians of the digital world. i’m not sure of their significance yet, but i think it’s safe to -ssume they are some kind of computer program designed to disrupt the boy (who is essentially a computer virus) and they are being manifested into the real world. they also contribute to the idea that this world is stuck in a loop because this keeps repeating throughout the story

the loop:
another important theme of the script is the loop. the boy is stuck in a world that seems to be repeating itself over and over again. in the video for sweatpants this is literally exactly what happens and in the script, when the boy and his friends are at the restaurant, he has the sudden realization: “…i was here before.” he goes on to explain: “this is every night. this is all nights, man.” as reality transitions further into cybersp-ce it get’s stuck in a loop, and the boy starts to pick up on this. in the beginning it just feels like dejá vu but as the loop continues, the feeling of dejá vu grows stronger and stronger, much like the progression of the sweatpants video. as the loop repeats again and again, the boy begins to feel like he is going insane because every day the sense that he has been here before grows stronger
the story also ends in almost the same way that it begins (the mansion) symbolizing the return to the beginning of the loop

things that repeat:
•s’mores
•the guards
•roscoe’s wetsuit
•buddha statue
•”there are people everywhere saying things, giving opinions, feeling interesting. everyone has a purpose tonight. it’s a great time.”
•trust
•talking about things you’ll “never remember and don’t really care about.”
•girls

naomi
i read something that said more than likely we all just do this all again. it’s all a cycle

the boy
i like that theory

sum = 0;
while (true) {
printf(“i thought you ‘were the internet’?”);
i = getuserinput();
if (i – 0) {
sum += i;
}
if (sum > 100) {
break;
}
}
