a sequel to the one they made before with robert duvall

but this one was starring jon voight as captain call
there was a casting call
in the community theater school i’d just graduated from

i had some dialogue, i sang “danny boy”
they asked me if i could ride a horse
i said “a little bit” and i was employed
but what i hadn’t told them was the last time i was saddled on a horse was so long ago
riding our family’s ancient mare susie in circles with my sister on the back
being led by a rope
at never more than a lope
at the time i did not think this was a slippery slope

listening to uncle tupelo
on a honda stereo

i arrived at my first day of shooting
everyone was gathered by some palominos
rick schroder was telling a story of a time in texas
when he k!lled a bunch of javelinas with a bow and arrow
he stuffed them in the trunk of his car
all bl~~dy and gross
then out came the director
and told us he was ready to shoot the scene
let’s keep this on course
so everyone on their horse
with your rifles firing, galloping at full force down a ravine

before the camera started rolling
i went over to the director pointing at the filly
i said when i told them i could ride a horse
i said “a little bit” i meant “not really”
he seemed a but put out and told me to take the day off
and they’d figure it out
the next thing that i knew
they called and said i’d a different part that they would assign
i’d still have a few lines
and the summer tumbled on in the meantime

and i was some indeterminate shape

planning my imminent escape

and i was led inside a suburban to the set

so they lacquered me with makeup and they point me to the lights

i had one line addressed to jon voight
and i had practiced it nearly to a science
it was “law’s either kept out of it or bought and paid for by their alliance”
but in the pressure of the moment
with all the lights and cameras around
and an [?] buck
i stammered and i stuttered
the words all turned to mush in my mouth
the line just kept getting stuck
till the director said cut
and jon had to take me aside for a pep talk

this story has a happy ending
jon had lunch with me in the cantina
he told me all about how he got started

and i was returned to my clothes, i got into my car
and when i finally got my paycheck
totalling more money than i had seen thus far
i blew it on a guitar amp
and headed directly west for school’s start
