(i. black on black)

[perspective: young, inner~city black male, chicago]
it’s a cold rainy night here in chicago
handmedown socks and fresh nikes soaked as i walk down the cracked streets
pass my neighbor’s car that costs more than his house
hope the guys playing basketball up ahead don’t get upset by the color of my faded shorts…

you see the schools aren’t so great around here
home life ain’t much better
when your mama’s a crackhead and you never met your dad
prospects for the future be lookin’ mighty grim…
probably join a gang or something

my belly’s full of greasy, fried, addictive foods
it’s all i’ve known
and i just really wish the cops would leave me alone
what happens to a person when they’ve no one there to teach?
and anything they ever wanna do is always out of reach?

fifteen hit in a shooting on the south side the other day
kids and old ladies caught in the crossfire
what big bad men you are…
somebody’s mama shot dead at his funeral
just another day in the jungle heat
our clothes were different colors but our skin was the same
brotherhood be d~mned
survival of the fittest is a lifestyle and a rule
simply to keep up appearances, i would k!ll a fool
life itself’s not worth much when you never will be too
when god and government abandon you, what’s left to do? (nothing; waste away…)

(ii. the thin blue line)

[perspective: two local police officers in the aftermath of the breonna taylor k!lling]
officer johnson: “hey, coleman, can you hand me that box of doughnuts over there?”
officer coleman: “yeah, sure thing johnson… hey, rick… did you hear about mattingly shooting that n~gga the other day?”
officer johnson: “sure did, gary… the dumb motherf~ckers went in the wrong house…”
officer coleman: “heh, yeah i gotta go to court to testify on behalf of his character.”
officer johnson: “better make sure to give him a swimming review.”
officer coleman” “yeah, he’s a swell guy…”

(iii. the curious case of george floyd)

[perspective: visibly distressed black man in police custody]
please mister officer
i can’t breathe
i’m a~chokin’ on
your knee!
help me, god!
help me, mama!

(officer): “shut up, boy, are you on drugs?!”
puh~lease mister officer
in this heat
i can’t breathe!

imminent threat
the stage is set
ready the powder
keg is wet with flame
soon to ignite, burst, and incite a riot
let’s blame all our problems on the white man

after all, he brought us here on ships
and he didn’t understand our cl!cks
when he said we didn’t wanna go

(iv. black and blue)
~instrumental~

(v. greyscale)

[perspective: an onlooker who finds it all so tiresome]
i’ve got something to say
the whole d~mn thing is a crying shame
the stove’s hot with water in the pot
and it’s soon to boil over
black and white ain’t so black and white
although the lines are getting blurry
i don’t know why the victimized
choose to relive their suffering

the only way to stick it to the man
is to come together in unity
we can recognize where evil lies
and move forward without grudges

i long for a world where i am not
stigmatized by the color of my skin
and i wish the dumbass cops
would stop shooting minorities

the real problem isn’t racism, though
it’s the extent of their authority…
it’s almost like these hate crimes in the spotlight
happen to further divide us…

stop the violence, stop the blindness
consider who you fight
the truth is that no lives matter
and the devil isn’t white
