jimmy carter was born near plains, georgia in 1924. as a boy, he was a very hard worker and was the first of the carters to leave the state of georgia to go to college. he soon joined the navy and was just about to join a prestigious submarine regiment when carter learned that his father had died. jimmy dropped everything to be by his family’s side and to take over the family’s business: a peanut farm. with carter’s help, the farm began to make good money. after a few years, carter began to seek something more. he ran for georgia state senate and lost due to corruption. carter stood up and demanded a recount. it went all the way to the georgia supreme court. when the judge took one look at the ballots (some were from dead people, put in there to elevate his opponents numbers), he gave the election to carter. this was the beginning of his political career

several years later carter ran for governor and was easily defeated. he began to ask god what he should do. he knew that politics was full of sin: lying, cheating, greed. but he also knew that god would want him to use his political sway in order to help make a difference in this world. he decided to run for governor again. this time he won. carter’s term as governor was mildly successful. when it came time to run again, carter had bigger dreams to fulfill. he decided to run for president even though no one knew who he was. carter was in the right place at the right time. this was 1976, little over a year after the watergate scandal
carter appealed to the m-sses because he was just a regular guy from georgia. he was not a lawyer. he did not play political games. he promised to tell the american people the truth. and with these core values, carter was elected as president of the united states in 1976. a peanut farmer from georgia

unfortunately, this was the 1970s and there was a lot of turmoil going on. the cold war was still at hand, despite the détente efforts of nixon. also, the middle east was in turmoil. it was with foreign policy that carter thrived. he invited president anwar el sadat from egypt and prime minister menachem began of israel to camp david, a presidential retreat in maryland. after 13 days of secret negotiations, the three leaders signed a treaty called the camp david accords. this treaty agreed that israel would give up the sinai territories that it had taken from egypt if egypt would recognize israel as a country

carter also signed another strategic arms limitation treaty (salt ii) with soviet leader breszhnev. but this was soon to be short lived, as congress refused to ratify it. the soviet union invaded afghanistan in 1979 against our wishes. in response the us boycotted the 1980 olympic games in moscow

this was as good as it got for carter. for starters, the economy was terrible. inflation was at an all time high, meaning no one was hiring, no one was saving their money, everyone was scared of the future. unemployment was up. and instead of calming the people down, carter told them to buck up and do their part. there was also an oil shortage going on due to conflicts in the middle east and an opec embargo on all of israel’s allies. this meant that the u.s. could get no oil saudi arabia. instead of threatening a reaction, carter told the american people to reduce their energy use. he led by example, turning down the thermostat in the white house to a cool 55 degrees during the winter

finally, the iranian revolution began in 1979. iran had been led by a guy named ‘the shah,’ a man who was very good friends with the american government. he made millions selling us iran’s oil. but little of these profits were used for the people so they began to revolt. they began ripping up pictures of jimmy carter and causing riots. they even threatened to take over the united states emb-ssy. the shah got so scared he went ‘on vacation.’ an islamic fundamentalist, the ayatollah khomeni, took over iran and swore to rid the country of any western influence
the shah begged the united states to let him in to the country to get medical attention for cancer. carter, a human rights activist, and his cabinet agree to let him in. the next day, islamic fundamentalists stormed the american emb-ssy and took 52 americans hostage
carter desperately tried to maneuver a way out of this. he tries diplomacy (‘talking it out’). he then tries a rescue effort, which failed. by the end of his presidency, he had a lower approval rating than nixon did during the watergate scandal. he lost the election of 1980 to ronald reagan…by a landslide. until reagan is sworn in january 20, 1981, carter worked endlessly to negotiate the release of the american hostages. it is only after reagan was sworn in (a day later!) that iran agreed to release the hostages

jimmy carter has gone on to do a great many things. he created the carter center as a place to work on diplomacy with foreign countries (a strength he demonstrated during his presidency). he also helped erect houses for the poor through habitat for humanity. it wasn’t until 20 years later that he iwas recognized for his work with human rights: in 2002 he won the n0bel peace prize for “his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
