i’ll tell you this one more, this is like a ghost story, man, this and this, it happened a few years ago

uh, i remember, when it started, you know, like, if you see this
this is, like, 15 bucks worth of clothes from a thrift store, right
and when you’re young and you buy clothes like this, you kind of look like you’re in a group, you know
but when you’re older and you buy clothes like this, sometimes you come off as outdoors, you know what i mean?

do you know what i mean?
that’s what they used to call homeless, outdoors
more fitting, right?
ha, and you know, a lot of times in the lobby of the hotel they will, i’ll get singled out and they’ll say
“excuse me, sir, are you a guest with us here?”
ha, ha. then they say, “can i see your key?”

that’s true. and one time, i’m just thinking of these
um, one time i was in reno, nevada, and they have this creek that runs through the middle of town
and all these great, flat rocks in the sun
so i walked down there and i fell asleep in the sun, next to the creek
and about, i don’t know how long went by but when i came out

um, when i woke up, it was this priest who was shaking me
he said, “come on, wake up”
and i looked behind him and he had a couple of guys that kind of looked like me
but they weren’t in bands, they was outdoors, hey
and uh, and he said, “come on, we’re getting lunch”, you know
so, i didn’t want to be that, you know, the d~ck
i didn’t wanna be mister, “i have a place”, you know
so, uh, i went with them f~ckin’ guys
they got a sandwich, and an apple, and some chips
i love that town, man, ha, ha

but the funniest one, the whole reason why i started telling you this
uh, was, just not very long ago, i was telling you earlier i went through a psychedelic drug phase, you know
and this guy, god rest his soul, neil kasow, he was living out in ventura, california, right
and so i’m staying at the pierpont hotel, there

and i think i’m fine, sh~t, i mean, i’d probably been trippin’ b~lls for a while but i’d been on the road, or whatever
i mean, i hadn’t not been around anybody
but i go, this was the worst one, i go and i sit on the beach
and i’m just sitting there enjoying the sun
and this, like, pastor~looking guy
he didn’t have one of these things but he had a bible, and he had a group of people with him
and he said, ha i swear, he said, “sir, would it be okay if we pray for you?”
that stung a little, you know?
ha, ha, i looked outdoors

ha, so i said, “f~ck it, yeah”, and you wanna know something funny?
i wasn’t even sure if i believed it was really happening, you know?
i don’t know if you’ve ever, like, taken acid for, like, a long chunk of time
but it starts to get debatable, everything starts to get debatable
so, i was, like, i wonder if this is f~ckin’ happening, i said, i said, “knock yourself out, knock yourself out”
so, him and this group of people, he had on like a light blue golf t~shirt, i remember, and khaki pants
and him and his friends all held hands, they held hands in a circle around this poor old folk singer who was just minding his f~cking business

and they, they got in a circle around me and the guy starts praying
here’s where, i swear this is true, it gets weird
there’s this, like, little boardwalk, yeah, there’s a little boardwalk and now here coming down the boardwalk is this man and his wife
and their little daughter is walking beside them

only she looks like she’s going to be in a play, right, to me
and i’m looking at them and i’m looking at this circle of people
and i look at the dad like, ah, you know, what do you want from me, you know?
and then i make eye contact with that girl
and in my mind i said, “i don’t even know if these people around me are real”
and that girl said, “they’re real”

and then she said, “but i’m not”
