when i was two years old, i saw a ghost
we lived in an old house of creaking boards—
dark and rough~
bending and boughing to allow the passage of a frigid gust (ghost) of wind
or an occasional serpent and scorpion
i shared a bedroom with my sister—
with windows overlooking the front porch
outside the window was a winged back victorian chair with a seat made of worn gold velvet
it was weathered and full of holes
it had belonged to my mother who died shortly after i was born

the night i saw her, i had been sleeping soundly next to my sister
when i was awoken by a rapping on the glass window
i got up to investigate only to find
a beautiful and strangеly familiar woman on the other side of thе window
in the chair

i liked her instantly and climbed up into the window
feet balanced on the sill
to get a better look
she had kind eyes, and when she smiled, i started laughing

she took this cue and began to dance for me
i laughed and laughed until i woke my aunt up
she came into the bedroom
startled to find me perched in the window, laughing and talking to the empty night air
she asked, “who are you talking to?”
as she gathered me from the window and tucked me back into bed
i said “my mother”
she looked disturbed and said “i’m your mother, dear”
the next morning i received a stern reprimand for standing in the window
and it wasn’t until i went outside later to play
that i noticed the old victorian chair was gone
