lirik lagu st. catherine's child - the faraway
for this kind of ascension an affair is all you need
the sour taste of metal in the ground beneath your feet
there along the riverbank facing to the east
the ferry right on time approaches slowly through the reeds
the morning mist reveals a painted eye upon the prow
the ship moors up beside you but it doesn’t make a sound
the ferryman expressionless greets you with a bow
he rests his oar against the mast and lets the ladder down
you hide your brеath and offer him a coin beneath your tonguе
his withered hand accepts it, and it’s too late now to run
the rising sun is blinding but it’s cold upon your face
the shoreline rushes past you but the ferry leaves no wake
suddenly it dawns that there’s no passengers, no crew
the river meets horizon, just the ferryman and you
you ask him for his name and the old man gives no reply
he turns to face the river and he looks you in the eye
with a voice as soft as sand he says, “i know just why you’re here
you know that there’s been stowaways as long as there’s been years.”
the last one was a king and he was looking for his friend
he thought it would be worth it, just to see his face again
the river shrieks and deepens and the banks begin to flood
it rises up like honey and it crashes down like blood
a woman wrapped in leather wings smiles with jet black t~~th
the ferryman waves calmly and the water starts to scream
the sky begins to darken and the moon hangs bright within
the boat beneath is shimmering, part glass, part keratin
distant mountains flank an ornate bridge that’s thatched with gold
he quickly wraps you in his cloak to hide you from the toll
your heart is beating fast now, feather light but dense as lead
he says, “this is far more interesting than small talk with the dead”
the gateway now is looming, pulling light in from the shore
he says, “the one you’re seeking will be waiting at the door”
he tells you not to linger and he warns you of the cost
yes, gilgamesh succeeded here but many more are lost
he gestures to the harbor and there you disembark
the sky melts into water and the river floods with stars
and there on the pavilion you see a friendly face
you run like coming home, you make the most of the embrace
of course he’s glad to see you but he’s also horrified
that your grief is so consuming that you’d risk your only life
the voices here are bigger than you’ll ever understand
i can be here in the afterlife and still can hold your hand
he calls over the ferryman, he greets him like a friend
there’s so much more to do before you make this trip again
the people that will mourn you don’t yet walk upon the earth
the pain begets the joy, that’s what your bravery is worth
he’s smiling from the riverbank, you sail into the night
toward the shores of home, toward your wild and precious life
