john tooby: the notion of the blank slate is something that’s had enormous cultural appeal and has been what we call the standard social science model for the 20th century, and yet i think this model is now passing away

steven jones: evolutionists are to social sciences as statues are to birds ~ it’s a convenient platform upon which to deposit ill~thought~out ideas, ill~digested ideas. and the darwin statue has been mightily splattered by various sociologists and politicians left, right and centre, and it’s childish, it’s just childish

sociobiology
edward o. wilson

edward o. wilson: sociobiology is a term applied to a science. it is the study of the biological basis of all forms of social behaviour in all kinds of organisms…so far it’s still about 90% zoology ~ the study of animals ~ and that part is quite solidly based, it’s not in serious dispute. it’s when you get into the possible applications to human beings that we run into doubt, controversy

harvard colleagues
richard lewontin and stephen j. gould
the fault, dear edward, is not in our genes
not in our genes

richard lewontin: sociobiology is, as a matter of fact, part of a general movement that’s been growing. it’s the notion that whatever one sees in society is a consequence of the biology of the organism. now, the implications of a view like that, namely that what we are is coded in our genes, is the implication that really the amount of change that can be brought about in society is very limited. it’s a strongly conservative view. it tells those people who are either radical reformers or revolutionaries that what they’re trying to do is biologically impossible, because it goes against the grain, so they ought to cut it out

[verse]
washington conference
true believers cry eugenics
shouting down his speech
they storm the stage
to empty water on his head
shouting “wilson, you’re all wet! wilson, you’re all wet”
ian mcewan: i think he was much maligned and misunderstood in that book. its final chapter simply suggested that we have a nature, that we are not simply blank sheets. we’re not tabula rasa. we have evolved among each other and we have a social nature. and he was simply suggesting that this is something that could be usefully explored. the stick he got for suggesting that we were not simply a blank slate: he was accused of being a n~z~. i mean it was just…the closed minds of some sections of the left, i think, in the late seventies were pretty horrifying
