the old christmas truck
a story i wrote especially for all the kiddies of all the truck drivers, everywhere

i was told this story happened sometime back in the early ’40s
a long, long time before freeways were even thought of
and the roads were narrow, and very, very dangerous

it was the day before christmas at an orphans’ home high up in the mountains
and the people at the orphans’ home were mighty concerned about the little boys and girls having a christmas that year
because the little town below had always donated toys at christmas time
and brought them up in what they called the ol’ christmas truck
but this year the roads were of solid ice up to the orphans’ home
and no one would attempt to make that run, up that steep mountain road, in that ol’ truck
the townspeople had asked for volunteers, and even offered money to anyone who would drive the ol’ truck
but everyone was afraid to try

an ol’ hobo who had jumped from a passing freight train stopped at a farmhouse to ask for a handout
so, the farmer gave him food
as the farmer and the ol’ hobo talked, the farmer told the hobo about the orphan’s home
and that it would be a mighty sad christmas this year for those little boys and girls

then the hobo said that he used to drive a truck
and he would be more than glad to try to get up that mountain
but he wouldn’t take any money for it
so, the townspeople agreed to let the ol’ hobo try
though they were doubtful anyone could make it
they watched the ol’ hobo drive up the mountain in the ol’ christmas truck
the roads were mighty slippery, and he fought against sliding off into deep, deep canyons below
but he kept pushing on and wouldn’t give up
about halfway there, a blizzard hit, and it snowed and snowed
there was no turning back now, and the ol’ hobo knew it
still, he kept pushing on, though he was freezing by now
for the heater in the ol’ truck had froze up

later, when the roads were passable, the townspeople drove up to the orphan’s home
they asked about the ol’ hobo and the truck, and all the little christmas toys
well, it seems that somehow, christmas morning
all the toys the town had donated were under the tree, alright
but, to this day, the people at the orphan’s home swear they don’t know how they got there
because all they saw the next morning was the ol’ christmas truck
they never saw the ol’ hobo
just little hoof prints and sleigh tracks in the snow

i wonder
was that ol’ hobo
