lirik lagu raphael fabis - the cloaked band

Loading...

[intro]
a cloaked band through the hills mimicked the blowing of dust
gaúchos, hors~m~n free and co~rs~, singers of atavistic verses
headed to their meandering river, the frontier
of life and paradise

[verse 1]
farther away from the families that could’ve been
in haunted shacks that now housed but resting drovers
all uncaring of laws and society
as their red neckerchiefs ebbed them to certain tragedy

[chorus 1]
for against the southern wind there is no shelter
it tears all from each other into their raw experience
into the destiny that is life

[verse 2]
in that lonesomeness grew a boy by feeling himself
the world reining him through the vague pulse of its design
even if it let his mind adrift in dreams of the distance
and all its life unseen, the hyacinths floating in moonlit creeks

[chorus 1]
but when the cattle surged, he was there
just like the band, trying to trick the lead steer into following them
trying to trick the quero~queros into not waking up the guarded darkness of the forests by the bank
and praying the tide would still as they waded through the river
[bridge]
then fixing eyes in the trail of fences, covering from the panic
of how the misty pampas could be so free, infinite
until the sun rose to reveal they were always the same
a ranch, a stone corral, a barn and ever bare, exact prairie

[chorus 2]
and at the crossroad, there surely stood a wattle~and~daub bolicho
with shelves full of trinkets to sell back on the other side
after spending a day or two on cards, bones and horse races
at least until liquor and lost bets loosened machetes to dance the accordion

[interlude]
days the boy spent with nausea and migraines
laying in sacks of flour, trying to ignore the brash gossiping of the farmhands
gloating their humility from the heights of virtue, as people that knew the value of hard work
unlike the errants that took over the shop as if it were theirs
yet his band too didn’t do themselves any good
never speaking more than grunts yet demanding flawless understanding
never letting go of their indifference, as if those hills made them monarchs
shepherding forth in false harmony all the world was bound to

[chorus 2]
but sometimes they’d stop to taste their green through mate
and always sing of what they should have been
the kindling riders that felt wilderness as home
the magic treasures that barely hid on chambers within the ground
the pampas of thriving jesuit missions
[outro]
yet all the glory of that past resided within nameless wooden crosses
like the hyacinth creek somewhere, it was only a dream upon the now
a dream of distance which he’d become
no one would know the real him
no one would know the torments he let wash him over every time
lulled to their riptide by the snaps of the ground fire…
