scott arceneaux jr. ($crim) and aristos petrou (ruby da cherry) are cousins and thus had a close relationship growing up. realizing that they were both interested in pursuing a career in music seriously and both unhappy with the direction their lives were going, they formed the duo $uicideboy$, making a pact that if their music careers did not work out, they would both commit suicide. in an interview with american media outlet mass appeal, ~rs~nault stated, “it was very much like cutting your hand, bleeding, and making a pact that there was no plan b, that if this didn’t happen by the time we were 30, i was going to blow my head off.”[12] after teaming up, they formed the label g~59 records, with scott focusing on writing the music for the tracks. musical career
the duo’s first collaborative project was a three~track ep titled k!ll yourself part i: the $uicide $aga, which was released in june 2014 on soundcloud and bandcamp, attracting the attention of listeners for its collaboration with renowned underground rapper bones. in the following months, the duo released nine more iterations of the k!ll yourself series. these releases established the group’s distinctive sound and recognition. after a series of collaborative eps with fellow underground artist black smurf, their first full~length project, gray/grey, was released on march 3, 2015
$uicideboy$’s underground breakthrough came with the release of the 2015 ep $outh $ide $uicide, a collaboration with renowned south florida rapper puya, which catapulted the duo into the underground rap spotlight.[13][14] as of october 2018, the album has amassed over 75 million streams on the streaming platform soundcloud alone. the duo’s first foray into mainstream music charts came with the release of the ep radical $uicide in the summer of 2016. produced by edm artist getter, the ep peaked at number 17 on the billboard rap charts.[15] in 2017, $uicideboy$ released the remaining 10 installments of the k!ll yourself saga,[16] produced several tracks on juicy j’s upcoming album, collaborated with him and a$ap rocky on the song “freaky”, and announced the release of their full~length debut album, i don’t want to die in new orleans, on december 1, but eventually pushed the release date back indefinitely. the album was later renamed i want to die in new orleans
on september 7, 2018, their debut studio album, i want to die in new orleans, was released.[17][18] a post on the duo’s official instagram account stated, “we started recording this album in early 2017. we initially wanted to write about our experiences on the road and express how our lives had become a little more extravagant.”[19] $uicideboy$ have gained a cult following in the hip~hop scene, in part due to their niche subject matter, which includes topics rarely seen in rap, such as suicidal ideation, satanism, and depression. as of august 2021, their most~viewed music video on youtube is their song “paris”, with nearly 150 million views; “and to those i love, thanks for sticking around” is the most~streamed song on their spotify page, with 800 million streams.[20] the duo was included on billboard’s list of “billboard dance’s 15 artists to watch in 2017”.[21] in late 2018, it was rumored that the duo had broken up following a series of ominous tweets. however, they soon clarified that the tweets were related to “personal issues” ~rs~nault was going through and that they had not actually broken up.[22]
