int. 1659 castle ct ~ patty’s special bedroom ~ evening

caroline jones combs her hair and talks to herself in the mirror about her crush on tom and buck trollie sings a duet with her

caroline jones: (smiling)
oh, tom… you’re all i think about
the way you laugh, the way you look at me… i know you feel it too. but what can i do?
i’m just a girl with a simple heart in a world full of… (pauses, looking at patty in her pajamas with her hand on stuffed toy sheep) patty. (turns to patty) you’re so lucky, you know? you have your whole life ahead of you

patty: (rubs her eyes, smiling)
i’m talking to boo my sheepy

caroline jones (walks to patty and carries her to bed)
patty, your father is a singer for little girls. isn’t that a finally comе true

patty: (sleepy)
but where’s vanеssa

caroline jones:
she’s in montrose bridge summons the ghost of freddie. it’s alright, patty

patty: (sleepy)
who’s freddie? he’s a band member of queen? (she falls asleep)

caroline jones: (gently)
yes. but, patty, freddie is more than that. he’s a legend, a spirit of music that brings joy to everyone. now he died of aids in 1991. right now, he’s a ghost. (excitement) well, i’m going to the ball with him tonight. (she walks away from patty’s bedroom)
transition:

ext. montrose bridge ~ night

vanessa: even better

vanessa sees a ghost of freddie mercury standing at the edge of the bridge, the wind playing with his iconic buck teeth. she approaches him with a mix of excitement and caution

vanessa: (whispering) freddie!

freddie mercury: (turns, smiling) ah, you’ve come to join me in the before~party

vanessa: yes, i do. i’ll call you “bucky”, okay?

freddie mercury: (laughs) that’s quite the name you’ve given me. but alright, bucky it is every time

vanessa: you’re wearing tap shoes, bucky. did you get lost on the way to the jazz club?

freddie mercury: (laughs) no, my dear. these are for the grand entrance

vanessa: i wish i had tap shoes too. then we could dance our way there

freddie mercury: (winks) i’ve got an extra pair in the spirit realm, darling. your niece cousin alexis is thinking about you of her optimistic ways

vanessa: my niece alexis? she’s always been so full of life
freddie mercury: i know

and on that — they sing [a lovely night from la la land] together. their voices resonating in the quiet night, the bridge lights reflecting off the water below creating a serene backdrop

vanessa and freddie mercury try to downplay the romanticism of this setting, this moment — being lost here, at night, alone together, atop a hill, the city glittering before them. it’s no big deal, nothing they haven’t seen or felt before— because, after all, there’s no chance for romance between them…

of course, the music, swelling and building, suggests otherwise. vanessa tires of her hells, finds a bench and fishes for flats in her handbag. freddie mercury sits besides her as she slips the flats on. they look at each other, suspicious…

freddie mercury: (singing)
the sun is nearly gone
the lights are turning on
a silver shine that stretches to the sea
we’ve stumbled on a view
that’s tailor~made for two
what a shame those two are you and me
some other girl and guy
would love this swirling sky
but there’s only you and i
and we’ve got no shot
this could never be
you’re not the type for me

vanessa: really

freddie mercury: (singing)
and there’s not a spark in sight
what a waste of a lovely night
vanessa: (singing)
you say there’s nothing here?
well, let’s make something clear
i think i’ll be the one to make that call

freddie mercury:
but you’ll call?

vanessa: (singing)
and though you looked so cute
in your polyester suit

freddie mercury:
it’s wool?

vanessa: (singing)
you’re right, i’d never fall for you at all
and maybe this appeals
to someone not in heels
or to any girl who feels
there’s some chance for romance (freddie mercury whistling) but, i’m frankly feeling nothing

freddie mercury: (singing)
is that so?

vanessa: (singing)
or it could be less than nothing

freddie mercury: (singing)
good to know, so you agree?

vanessa: (singing)
that’s right

freddie mercury and vanessa: (singing)
what a waste of a lovely night

he moves his foot. she moves hers. they looks at each other again. still suspicious…

he moves again. she moves again. they seem to be moving in sync — without their even wanting to…

and — bit by bit — before our eyes — they’ve almost slipped into dance…

freddie mercury rises. vanessa rises as well. the two look at each other. run back to the bench, hop atop it — the lights stretch put like a magic carpet. they share a moment — share a look — jump off — and start really tap dancing now…

vanessa does a move, freddie mercury responds. freddie does a move, vanessa shakes her head “nope”. they make the road their own, growing more and more energized, as surprised as we are to find — …that they can really tap dance together

just as this starts to looks like a blossom romance, real joy peeking through, our two heroes getting closer and closer and closer, looking at each other giddily… …a sound of two graffiti sprayers, george and amber, laughing and painting the bridge with their neon spray cans interrupts the moment

vanessa and freddie mercury stop, looking over to them, tension building like a beat drop in a silent disco

vanessa: (whispering) oh, no

freddie mercury: (shouts) hey!

george and amber stop and stare in shock at the sight of freddie mercury and vanessa tap dancing on the bridge

george: (whispers to amber) did you see that?

amber: (whispers) who are they?

vanessa: (sheepishly) uh, we’re just… rehearsing. for a… play. yes, a play

freddie mercury: (laughing) you guys are terrible liars. we’re just two souls

george: (cackling) a play? on this bridge? in the middle of the night?

amber: (joins in the laughter) you guys are something else!

vanessa: (playfully) it’s a very avant~garde production

freddie mercury: (to vanessa) hey, i’m a tap dancing bucky ready to reload like an atom bomb, darling

vanessa: (laughing) and i’m apparently your dance partner

george: (intrigued) can we join in? we’ve got rhythm too

amber: (holds up spray can) and a stage!

vanessa: (to george and amber) no! i mean, it’s a closed rehearsal. for vips only

freddie mercury: (winks at vanessa) yeah, like there’s no tomorrow, darling. remember, dullness is a 2009 experience of this is it tour. (laughs)
