mortimer casketwine: welcome back to the poecast. since we last spoke, we’ve dug up more evidence in poe’s stories, each stranger than the last. they’re not just horror tales… they’re crime scenes. and to help us decode them, we’ve brought in backup: part critic, part detective… professor lars. you’ve read the еvidence, you’ve studiеd the scenes. tell us, who k!lled edgar allan poe?

mc lars: well, you see, the brilliance in “house of usher” isn’t the collapse itself, but the architecture as metaphor. the house is roderick’s nervous system. the bricks are the neurons, yhe fissure is inherited trauma. it’s less homicide, more epistemological rot…

mortimer casketwine: so… that’s the suspect?

lars: well, let’s look at “the black cat”… textbook perverseness. the narrator doesn’t just want to k!ll… he’s compelled. it’s an early literary case file of compulsive disorder. you could even say it was freud before freud! eye~gouging as the birth of modern psycho~n~lysis, maybe?

mortimer casketwine: eye~gouging, sure. but again… who k!lled poe?

lars: i mean, “amontillado” is where it gets juicy. montresor doesn’t just k!ll fortunato… he walls him into the justification of the rhetoric itself. the mortar is irony, the bricks are unreliable narration. it’s less murder, more meta~commentary on entombment as text

mortimer casketwine: meta~commentary doesn’t leave you delirious in a baltimore alley, professor!

lars: how about “arthur gordon pym”? cannibalism, mutiny, colonial anxiety… it’s not gore, it’s allegory. the novel devours itself, like the crew devours parker. that’s the real crime scene!

mortimer casketwine: allegory didn’t beat our author to death behind a tavern, lars! give me a suspect. give me a name!

lars: fine. you want a name? i’ll give you one. the k!ller… was “the conqueror worm.”

mortimer casketwinego on

lars: five stanzas! trochaic tetrameter! rhyme scheme ababcdcd… perfectly symmetrical! each line is a stage direction: the mimes are humanity, the angels are the audience, and the worm is dramaturge! it doesn’t k!ll the actors… it consumes the play itself. death isn’t a villain… it’s a playwright! poe wasn’t murdered. he was scanned to death by his own meter!

mortimer casketwine: that’s not a murder theory, that’s a… prosody lecture!!
lars: exactly! and in stanza four, the phrase “a blood~red thing that writhes” scans perfectly… long stress, short stress, long stress. that’s the fatal pattern!

mortimer casketwine: fatal pattern?! he died in a gutter in baltimore! not in a poetry workshop!!
