life

was an old man, a starry old man
who lived deep in the woods on the river si
and on the si, a town nearby
the setting for this ancient rhyme
about a man, a starry old man

and his name was everyman, a hermit in the woods
who built a dam with his own hands to curb the raging si
for once a year, the mighty si would overflow her banks
and everyman would save the town that day

for thirty years
he repaired his dam single~handedly
and no one came to see
yeah the townspeople were too busy
to lend a helping hand
to a starry old man
the legend of the woods

death & irony

everyman will have the last laugh
and before he died, he wrote his own epitaph
and carved into a tree
a message to you and to me
i’ve done the best i could
though i’ve been misunderstood by the village
small child wandered deep into the woods
the townspeople searched and found everyman
now it went through the town that the old man had died
and his epitaph was found by his side
and the dam broke the next day
and the town was washed away
