dj es~pro: my faith is the core of everything i do in music. without it, i am nothing. i believe i’m a vessel chosen by the most high and the universe to bring forth high~frequency, authentic, and soulful music that resonates with people. my ancestors laid the foundation, and i feel a sacred responsibility to honor their sacrifices by staying aligned with my true purpose. when i’m in the studio, i follow the spirit and trust that the music will flow in the right direction. it’s not just making sounds—it’s channeling something divine
q: why do you avoid listening to music while creating new tracks?
dj es~pro: because i want to keep my sp~ce clean. i don’t want any outside energy bleeding into what i’m creating. even unconsciously, another track can influence you. i need everything i make to come straight from my soul—pure, unfiltered, and real. that’s how you make music that lasts. i’m not trying to mimic anything. i want every beat to be a reflection of my inner truth
q: how important is in~studio chemistry when working with artists?
dj es~pro: it’s everything. 90% of the process. back in the day, before it became easy for anyone to make music from a laptop, it was about connecting. you had to build with the artist. understand their mindset, their spirit. that bond is where the magic happens. you can have the dopest beat, but without real chemistry, it won’t hit the same. the best music comes from mutual trust and shared vision
q: what do you think separates a producer from a beatmaker?
dj es~pro: a beatmaker just makes beats and moves on. no real connection to the artist or the message. a producer? he’s all in. he helps shape the record, guide the direction, maybe even write or arrange parts. a producer cares about the whole package—how it feels, how it moves people, how it represents the culture. that’s what i do. i’m not here to just hand off beats—i’m here to create timeless art that means something
q: why are you expanding your sound beyond hip~hop into other genres?
dj es~pro: i’ll never leave hip~hop. ever. that’s in my blood. but like guru did with jazzmatazz or how madlib does it, sometimes you step out to explore and bring something fresh back to the table. i’m working on side projects in jazz and neo~soul because that’s also part of my sound. it allows me to grow, stretch creatively, and bring new textures to hip~hop when i return. i was given the title “torchbearer of the golden era” by the people, and i take that seriously. i’m expanding, not abandoning
q: which producers have influenced your style and creative process most?
dj es~pro: there’s so many. i’m a student of the greats. dj premier, pete rock, eric sermon, k~def, kay gee, quincy jones, barry white, rza, j dilla, kev brown, the alchemist… they all helped carve me out of the clay. each one taught me something different—how to flip samples, how to bring emotion into beats, how to feel the groove. their fingerprints are in my dna, but i always make sure to do it my way
q: how do you tailor beats to match an artist’s unique sound?
dj es~pro: i study. i stay a student. when i know i’m about to work with someone, i go deep into their catalog. i listen to where they’ve been and where they want to go. but i also stay rooted in what i do best. it’s about finding the overlap between their world and mine. once we connect on energy and vision, the process becomes natural. that’s when you make something that hits both their fans and mine
q: what legacy do you hope to leave in the music industry?
dj es~pro: i want the world to know that a kid from newark, nj made a real impact on the culture. that i helped revive something sacred when it was losing its soul. i want to be remembered as one of the illest to ever do it—someone who respected the craft, honored the legends, and stayed true while pushing things forward. i want to leave behind music that still speaks to people 50 years from now. that’s the kind of legacy i’m building
