the new york legislature
passed a bill, the feds said “sure”
the mta could charge cars and trucks
a congestion toll of fifteen bucks
in manhattan south of 60th st
this toll would mostly affect the elite
but everyone would face the choice
to pay, or take transit the toll avoids
and either way, avoid or pay
money would finally go to the mta!
signal upgrades and new rolling stock
more bus lanes blanketing every block
and the stations needing renovations can’t wait!

the new york congestion pricing
is such a nice thing!
the benefits it will have
can not be ignored!
mta can afford
to build the 2nd av subway! (ready someday!)
but some commuters disagree
they want their money
to stay where it is
they say “businesses
fail if it’s not free
to drive from long island or new jersey.”

june of 2024
almost time, just three weeks more
mta’s capital contracts wait
for the cash they’ll soon have on their plate
but the governor announced “not yet!
it’s on pause until some swing votes we get!”
she just betrayed the millions
in favor of some rich new jerseyans!
there’s no provision in the laws
letting the governor just order it to pause!
she decided that what mattered most
was to get scrambled eggs and french toast
at the diner. driving must define her. no spine

kathy lost credibility
by pausing the toll
she harmed the community
and who was this for?
are long islanders more
important than new york city? (what a pity!)
transit advocates were enraged
the governor gauged
political cost
and when harris lost
hochul said “it’s time
to bring the congestion pricing online!”

starting january 5
it’s no longer free to drive
the price went from 15 down to 9
but the toll was working as designed:
right away tunnels and roads were clear
it had just made all traffic disappear!
within a week, the 5th av bus
got so fast its schedules had to adjust!
the traffic once notorious
had been defeated now, and it was glorious!
cleaner air, less traffic everywhere
for all that, nine bucks is more than fair!
the old question of traffic congestion is solved!

boston and philadelphia
should take new york’s lead
and do something similar
one more lane never
fixed traffic forever
but the toll’s a magic
lever! (all together!)
they should blow up i~95
so less people drive!
and more ride the train!
there’s so much to gain
when cars pay their price
and driving downtown’s disincentivized!

president trump went and said
“congestion pricing is dead!
manhattan is saved, long live the king!”
hochul said “we will do no such thing!
the congestion pricing will remain
and you just called yourself a king? insane!
a king is not the president!
you can’t control states without their consent!
and no~one hates tolls more than me
but i’ll defend this toll, it’s new york’s sovereignty!”
kathy hochul’s turnaround was stark
as concluded she with this remark:
“if what we do makes you mad, we’ll see you in court!”

the governor had changed her mind!
congestion pricing
she now strongly stood behind!
against fascist plans
she ignored their demands
don’t comply with them in advance! (give them no chance!)
america will not bow down
to one with a crown!
he won’t violate
the rights of the state
if the people fight!
his bark is much scarier than his bite!

it stands for democracy
that $9 fee
keeps midtown traffic~free
