lirik lagu curt kennedy - secrets

these secrets in my head
oh, how they burden me
these secrets in my head
burn with urgency
if i tell you one or two or three
can you keep them between you and me
(shhh)
dirty secrets
[verse 1: curt kennedy]
today started in 343 bc
with aristotle’s bravado and climate theory that followed
the father of philosophy, socrates his grandson
had this ideology that blacks were not handsome
satan you command them, he said the sun it’s ransomed
its wrath on the africans, the impact it blackened them
none of this is random, africans are inferior
and destined to be slaves by the mentally more superior
in aristotle’s politics, judgments about a whole race
as incapable of self~governance, ’cause the black face
was burnt so the mind is unlearnt, so go to that place
and enslave them ’cause they won’t resist, in fact they can’t wait
they’re not brazen so you can persist and added this twist
they naturally and physically even were bred for this
with the sun as his philosophical justification
he outshined the son and true justification to some
[sample: unknown]
“aristotle provides a quite elaborate defense, an elaborate justification of slavery. aristotle, in other words, offers a theory of slavery, an account of why slavery is justified.”
[verse 2: curt kennedy]
now judaism had the narrative of creation
that god in his image humanity he would make them
forsake him’s exactly how adam lived
so when jesus was dying and felt forsaken
it was god doing what adam did
it’s deeper than that but that we’ll come back to
now back to the genesis scene, so can i ask you
was made in god’s image a skin tone? what color?
he was made from the dirt so did he look like a brother?
doesn’t matter, humanity failed so christ came through
and said that all who believe in him would be the same, too
claimed to be god and he was in humility
made us all one, there’s no wall of hostility
no free, no slave, no jew and no greek
in christ the imago dei’s skin tone is meek
so how did the church, then, allow this insanity
and trust aristotle’s understanding of humanity?

“i’ve discovered ~~ after becoming a christian, in fact ~~ i discovered that most people just completely misunderstand the intellectual history of christianity. there’ve been great philosophers: anselm, aquinas…”
[verse 3: curt kennedy]
now jesus commanded that people should love their neighbors
the same as themselves, that paul would explain later
the scripture was the rule of authority for the christian
but the mission was explain it to others in hopes they listen
so they glistened, gleaning from philosophy’s tradition
’cause critical thinking, it was highly respected
there in the greco~roman world where the christians would be neglected
philosophy and faith, it worked better than they expected
this was fishing, a part of the gospel, this expedition
would include philosophical diatribes for conviction
philosophy was needed to use and helped the conditions
for the christians to be taken more seriously in their wisdom
what it did, um, was prove that what we believe ain’t for kids, some
people called it unintellectual when it did come
so early theologians were studying aristotle
and the later theologians were easily quick to follow
[sample: unknown]
“and this time we’re going to talk about christianity, which was the major religion of europe during the middle ages. now, to really understand it, as with anything medieval, you have to understand the ancient context relatively well for anything in the middle ages to truly make sense. and that is very true of christianity. christianity emerged in the ancient world and was a product of antiquity. the main thing that really enabled christian theology to be what it was was greek philosophy and the greek philosophical process. so what i’m going to do is do a very brief run~through of how greek philosophy really shaped the way that christian thinkers thought about the world and interpreted the bible.”
part 2
[hook: curt kennedy]
1 slave, 2 slaves, 3 slaves, 4
5 slaves, 6 slaves, then you add some more
[verse 1: curt kennedy]
now that the gospel is spreading throughout the world stage
h~llenistic greek culture christ through the spirit invades
greek philosophers get saved, paved the ways
so we can defend the glorious faith that christ raised
and it’s spreading, early church is in rome, they picking bones
and dodging the stones thrown, trying to live in shalom
it made the gospel more attractive, it spread to africa and everywhere
all of a sudden greek and its tactics to match wits
fantastic, that gets us where? oh yeah, now we at constantine
not the keanu scene, but i am key on you seeing
africans were huge in the early church
go back and hear trees on #see4, yet we were treated like leaves
that’s before rome had turned north africa into southern europe
took theology from africans and overlooked it
through all their paintings and sculptures made that white and booked it
and started a church that’s still know for being crooked
[hook: curt kennedy]
1 thousand, 2 thousand, 3 thousand, 4
5 thousand, 6 thousand, then you add some more
[verse 2: curt kennedy]
time passes, the status of africans getting drastic
arab muslims conquered north africa pretty fast, it’s
the start that would lead to where we’re headed ’cause the
word spread that africans were ripe to be slaves, what aristotle said
is coming to fruition, this racist ideology
it’s 15th century, the portuguese would follow the
sentiment when prince harry’s nephew, king alfonso
sent some men, is it true that africans knees’ll bend?
and from then came a book by commander zurara
the first european book that said, yes, africans ought to
be enslaved, europeans would eat it up
so much for the scriptures, this ideology supplanted their theology
in 1526, one leo afric~n~s wrote
africans are hypers~xualized beasts, that’s quote~unquote
destitute of reason, it was aristotle~seasoned
that 3~volume set was turning saints into heathens
this is post~reformation, when all that good theology
was coming through and added to their love of good philosophy
books from explorers were changing the way the english thought
sound doctrine came but some practical stuff was never caught
puritan preacher william perkins taught the master~slave relationship
was a loving one st. paul would adopt
because many saw this as nurturing african beasts
they ignored brutality on slaves and their conscience appeased
[hook: curt kennedy]
1 million, 2 million, 3 million, 4
5 million, 6 million, then you add some more
[verse 3: curt kennedy]
when it was time for england to be new england
they started a new country that’s founded on christian meanings
the opposite of demeaning is where the scripture is leaning but
they ain’t get it though, so new england puritan preaching
was cool with getting folks and stealing folks from africa
sinful, nah it couldn’t be, this racist ideology’s
part of our culture’s history
the goal’s to save souls, who cares what we’re doing physically
and though some opposed, their voices didn’t get victory
slavery grows and grows, white americans feeling blessed
like jesus don’t oppose
they ain’t say let’s ignore the imago dei that he teaches
they just said we’re convinced these africans are beneath us
they believed they could save souls but physically treat us
however, ’cause the scripture made europeans elitists, whatever
it doesn’t, but they applied it, showing they liars
but the real secret, they loved mammon more than messiah
[outro: curt kennedy]
“aww, yeah. aww, yeah. they loved mammon more than messiah.”
