but there were two “way we were”s because marilyn and alan
being very creative and very prolific writers, uh
finished the song eight weeks before we needed it
and they said, “wеll, gee, we never havе the opportunity
to write a second lyric to the same song”
so, they wrote another lyric to it
to another melody, by the way, by marvin hamlisch
i thought it would be interesting to, you know, to sing it tonight
because it wound up on the cutting room floor
and tonight we figured we’d pick it up
and sing the other “the way we were”
which we don’t call “way were were two”
but to distinguish it from “the way we were one”
we call it “the way we weren’t”
that’s what we call it
